A quiet cosmic egg

Long ago, people looked up at the sky and wondered how the world had begun. The story of Pangu is one traditional Chinese answer told through imagination. In this myth, sky and earth had not yet separated. Everything rested inside something like a great, quiet egg. A giant named Pangu slept within it. There were no mountains, rivers or familiar paths. We are entering a myth: a story that expresses ancient imagination. It is different from a scientific explanation of how the universe formed.

What colours would you choose for the beginning of this story?

  2. The first light

At last Pangu woke. He stretched and found the space around him dark and cramped. In the story, he wanted to make room for a world. A first light appeared and the great egg slowly opened. The light, clear part rose and became the sky. The heavy part settled and became the earth. You can help this scene unfold without using any real tools. Move the separation control and watch the space widen. Pause anywhere, turn the view and notice how the scene changes from another direction.

What changes when sky and earth separate?

  3. Room for a world

Pangu stood between sky and earth. In the myth, he grew taller each day and the sky became more distant. The figure of a giant helped storytellers imagine the making of an enormous world. Now you can become the stage designer. Bring the mountains together to make a valley, or spread them apart like islands. Your arrangement does not need to match somebody else's. When you change the landscape, think about the words you would use to describe the new world in front of Pangu.

Would you arrange a valley or a group of islands?

  4. Mountains and clouds

The traditional story connects the giant with the mountains, wind and clouds. Our family retelling uses gentle stage images to explore that imagination. Peaks appear on the earth and clouds drift across the sky. Try adding a cloud, then taking one away. What kind of weather does your stage suggest? Move to another viewpoint and describe a path between the mountains. A family member can become the narrator. Record a name for this landscape, or tell us what Pangu discovers when he looks beyond the nearest hill.

What name would you give this landscape?

  5. Tell the next scene

Pangu's story passed an ancient imagination from one storyteller to another. Today you can join them. Make Pangu, the cosmic egg, mountains and clouds, and arrange them on your table. Tell the traditional story first. Then explain when your own adaptation begins. Will your Pangu explore a mountain or invite a friend to visit? For questions about the real universe and Earth, open a science story too. Compare the different roles of imagination and evidence. Your next scene can begin in the world you have just made.

Who could visit your world in the next scene?
